You'll never forget your first glimpse of spectacular Stonehenge, its monolithic rocks rising up against the skyline on Salisbury Plain. Theories abound about the mysterious rock formation. Was it intended as a religious temple? An astronomical clock? A Bronze Age burial ground? Make up your own mind as you explore the unique landmark that has had the world stumped for 5,000 years.
Soaring into the skyline, the spire of Salisbury Cathedral stands at a whopping 123m (404ft)! Erected 800 years ago, the revolutionary spire is considered one of the leading examples of Early English architecture. Ancient meets modern at the cathedral's newest addition: a beautifully sculpted font designed by William Pye. Salisbury Cathedral is also home to the world's oldest working clock and the best-preserved of the four remaining original copies of the Magna Carta. Marvel at this astonishing medieval document in the Chapter House with its slender central pillar and stunning medieval frieze.
Tantalise your taste buds in Salisbury with a traditional two course meal.
Standing proudly on the slopes of the River Avon, beautiful Bath was the first city in England to be designated an UNESCO World Heritage site. The gorgeous 15th century Bath Abbey, the stunning Georgian architecture, the romantic Pulteney Bridge, modelled on Florence's Ponte Vecchio, are all sights to linger on in the memory of your day.
No tour of Bath would be complete without a visit to the famous Roman Baths that gave the city its name. This beautifully preserved bathing complex still flows with water from Britain's only hot spring. Marvel at the dazzling torch-lighting ceremony as dusk falls (not applicable in summer) and sip Bath's healing waters in the Pump Room, a stunning neo-classical salon where hot spa waters are drawn for drinking.

We shall be amongst the first people to enter Windsor Castle, so you can see for yourself the splendor of St. Georges chapel and the sumptuous state apartments. Windsor itself is a pretty town full of traditional shops and historic pubs. Shakespeare is said to have written his play The Merry Wives of Windsor in one of them!
The most famous prehistoric monument in the world, and now a world heritage site, Stonehenge stands alone in the vast empty tract of Salisbury plain. Its origins date back nearly 5,000 years and it has been home to pagan religion and spiritual worship, not to be mention public debate ever since. What was this vast collection of stones intended for? Was it observatory of the moon, a temple to the sun, or an elaborate cemetery? Who were the people who carried and carved these 40 ton rocks? Come and unlock the secrets for yourself and marvel at this remarkable and mysterious feat of ancient engineering and design.
Lacock is an old National trust village located in the heart of the West Country. So picturesque are the tiny cobbled streets, ancient cottages and meandering rivers, that the village has been the setting for numerous period dramas and movies including, most recently, Harry Potter. After leaving London behind we take the old coach road to Bath, through Hungerford, Marlborough, along the Kennet valley and through the Savernake Forest. Evidence of this once important route lies all around us, historic coaching inns, chalk hill figures cut into the downland, obscure monuments to long forgotten characters and a subtle change in the landscape as we head into the golden stone villages of the Cotswold and Mendip hills. Our first stop will be in Lacock, a perfectly preserved village, now owned by the National Trust and often used as a backdrop to such films as the Cranford Chronicles, Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter. After a guided walking tour there will be free time to explore and take morning coffee before we continue towards the Avon valley and the city of Bath.
Visitors have been coming to Bath for centuries, owing to the hot springs that bubble up to the surface at several locations in the city. A constant temperature of 46.5C, the only warm springs in the country, meant that it became the important Roman resort of Aqua Sulis during the time of their occupation nearly 2,000 years ago. The city was beautifully re-invented in the 18th century when it became the fashionable place to see and be seen. Elegant crescents, squares and terraces were built as the rich and famous travelled from London for 'the season' and relieve themselves of gout, rheumatic pain and stiffness of the joints. The fully guided tour of the city includes admission to the Roman Baths museum and a tour of the highlights of Georgian Bath, including the Royal Crescent, Royal Circus and the Assembly Rooms.
After lunch and free time we meet up again and travel through mysterious Wessex, taking the back roads, through villages of flintstone and thatch and onwards to Salisbury Plain and the enigmatic circle of Stonehenge. Facts and theories abound at this ancient site, where and why, who were the builders, what was it used for? During our guided tour we learn about the different periods of building stretching back 5,000 years, we learn of the people that worship there and of the various ideas of its alignments and purpose. It is here, amongst the stone age landscape of Wiltshire, that we end our tour before returning to London.

Our first stop of the day will give you a chance to learn more about this monument, of its builders and those that worshipped there. Onwards to Isle of Avalon, through backroads of villages built of flint and thatch, from chalk downland into rolling limestone hills to Glastonbury Tor where legend tells us Arthur was brought after being mortally wounded in battle. We climb to the top to visit the ruined church of St Michael and admire the view of England's West Country laid out like a carpet below. In the ruins of the once great Glastonbury Abbey we find the gravesite of Arthur and learn of older legends like that of Joseph of Aramathea, the Holy Grail and the Crown of Thorns. After exporing the unique shops in the town we head over to the Chalice Well Gardens, drink from the spring and learn of the fate of the holy chalice from the Last Supper.
We end the day at the stone circle complex at Avebury. A collection of standing stones much larger than that of Stonehenge. Our guide will also reveal many other Neolithic sites in the area such as enigmatic Silbury Hill (Europe's tallest prehistoric structure), the Devil's chair and the Barber-Surgeon stone.

Travel back to a landscape that has played witness to every aspect of Britain's history, a history that has helped shaped these islands, from the Stone Age to the Romans, from the Medieval to the Victorians. On this tour we visit the stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge, the Neolithic burial chamber at West Kennet, the mysterious Silbury Hill and the delightful city of Salisbury with its beautiful cathedral and water meadows.
Our first stop is Old Sarum Castle where layer after layer of history is brought to life during our guided tour. This hilltop site has been settled for over 5,000 years, long before work began on the replacement city of Salisbury below. We can see evidence of Iron Age, Norman and Medieval remains before we make our way down the valley to the River Avon below. Here, within the water mills and meadows, where five rivers meet, stands the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral. Our guided tour inside will reveal how quickly it was built, a construction date of 1220 - 1258, we will visit the chapter house and see an original Magna Carta of 1215, England's only major constitution then admire the height of the tower and spire, rising up to 404 feet, the tallest in the country.
After lunch and free time, we travel up the Avon Valley taking the back roads to Stonehenge, through the Woodfords, passing thatched cottages with well kept gardens. Upon arrival we enjoy priority entrance and head up to the stones where we learn of the building and rebuilding of this awe inspiring monument. Learn of the people that constructed Stonehenge and the possible methods they used, how far the stones were moved to get them here, the purpose of the circle and how many questions still remain unanswered. Stonehenge isn't the only Neolithic site in the area, for on this day of discovery we also set foot inside an ancient burial chamber, West Kennet Longbarrow, built over 5,500 years ago and one of the largest in the country. We see mysterious Silbury Hill, Europe's tallest prehistoric structure and end the day at the largest stone circle in the world, the circles that surround Avebury.

Over 900 years of royal history are waiting for you in Windsor Castle, which is perched high above the River Thames just outside of London. From William the Conqueror all the way through to our current Queen, successive monarchs have lived here and left their mark on what is now the largest continuously occupied castle in the world.
What better way to enjoy lunch than in a classic country pub? Relax and soak up the charming atmosphere while being served some delicious home cooked food. Why not try the fish and chips?
Our final stop is Bath, another world heritage site. Bath is a beautiful Georgian city with delightful crescents, terraces and architecture. Following our panoramic tour of the city, there will be time to visit Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge overlooking the river Avon cascading over the weir. And you can shop, explore or take afternoon tea in the Pump Rooms while listening to the string quartet.
Returns to London at approximately 7.30pm

Taking the very essence of those well loved periods of English history, we spend our time on this tour discovering many aspects of our long and illustrious past, enjoying subtle changes from one era to the next, as old gives way to new and the new in turn becomes old, our guides will bring to you a 'harvest of history'. You will have the option to visit Windsor Castle and discover a montage of monarchs from Saxons and Normans to our present-day Queen, we travel to the delightful city of Bath forever linked to the ancient Romans and those opulent Georgian playboys and drive down country by-ways and leafy lanes to Stonehenge heading further back in time to prehistoric cultures and mysterious civilizations. By operating the tour in the opposite direction to the bigger coach tours from London we strive to give you a chance to see these wonderful sites before or after most of the crowds have arrived and left.
We make our first call at Stonehenge*, travelling through mysterious Wessex, arriving before the crowds in the mid-morning. Facts and theories abound at this ancient site, why and how? Who were the builders? What was its purpose? During our guided tour we learn about the different periods of building, stretching back over 5,000 years. We learn of the people who worshipped there, of the various ideas behind the alignments and use.
From here we head westwards to the golden limestone-clad city of Bath. People have been coming to Bath for centuries owing to the hot springs that bubble up to the surface at several locations in the city. At a constant temperature of 46.5C, the only hot springs in the country, the Romans enjoyed this place when they settled here almost 2,000 years ago, naming the resort Aqua Sulis. The city was beautifully re-invented in the 18th century when it became the fashionable place to see and be seen. Elegant crescents, squares and terraces were built as the rich and famous travelled from London for 'the season' to relieve themselves of rheumatic diseases, stiffness of the joints and gout. This fully guided tour includes admission to the Roman Baths museum and a tour of the highlights of Georgian Bath, including the Royal Crescent, Royal Circus and the Assembly Rooms.
Departing Bath we head along the Cotswold edge with views of the estuary of the River Severn and the distant mountains of Wales (weather permitting!) and onwards to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world. After a guided introduction to the town itself there is time to go inside and visit the Royal apartments, see Queen Mary's dolls house and gaze upon the last resting place of Henry VIII and Charles I in St George's chapel. Lavishly furnished rooms, a wonderful gallery of world famous art and views from the battlements across the Thames valley await the visitor as we wander around inside. We end the day at Runnymede. Long ago this was a Saxon meeting place but more importantly, after long drawn out negotiations between the barons and King John, the place where Magna Carta was agreed upon in 1215. We can walk around this historic site and learn of the implications of this document and then in turn learn how other nations have adapted this major constitution. It is here by the River Thames that we end the tour before our short journey back to London.

We wanted to let you know what an outstanding experience we had. This was our first trip to London and we typically avoid tour groups. We heard about your small tour groups through Rick Steve's London guide. We couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Not only were the sights amazing, but David was an incredible guide! He was very knowledgeable and personable. He did a fabulous job and we would recommend the trip to everyone! We will also notify Rick Steve's what a great experience it was and to keep your tours listed in his future books!
Thanks,
Len and Kathleen
